To meet these new challenges, an international
‘railway-specific standard’ for management systems has been
created in the form of IRIS (International Railway Industry
Standard) under the coordination of UNIFE (Union des Industries
Ferroviaires Europeenes). The aim is to satisfy the operators’
requirements concerning the quality and reliability of rolling
The initiative was largely instigated and
supported by the four largest system manufacturers (Bombardier,
Siemens, Alstom and Ansaldo Breda).
Suppliers and railway vehicle manufacturers
will thus have the chance in future to be audited and certified
by independent, UNIFE-accredited certification companies.
The TUV NORD Group is one of the first
certification companies to have concluded an accreditation
agreement with the UNIFE/IRIS group. The certification procedure
is base on the procedure established in ISO 9001: 2000.
The difference is that the audit assessment is based on
a scoring procedure through which the companies receive
a differentiated appraisal of their management system, enabling
them to adopt targeted approaches towards potential improvements.
